Heavy bleeding Pelvic infections Endometriosis Ovarian cyst Fibroid uterus Uterine cancer Cervical cancer Irregular Periods
A hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges. The cause of polycystic ovary syndrome isn't well understood, but may involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms include menstrual irregularity, excess hair growth, acne and obesity. Treatments include birth control pills to regularise periods, medication called metformin to prevent diabetes, statins to control high cholesterol, hormones to increase fertility and procedures to remove excess hair.
The ovaries in a woman’s body create an egg each month which, as a part of the normal menstrual cycle is released every month. This process is known as ovulation. When ovulation does not occur these follicles turn into cysts.
Blood Tests: The blood tests will reveal if there is too much of androgen (the male hormones) in your body as well as other hormones which can indicate a thyroid condition instead of PCOS. The blood test will also include a test for sugar levels and diabetes.
Pelvic Exam: A pelvic exam will be performed to check for signs of extra male hormones.
Pelvic ultrasound: A pelvic ultrasound can reveal enlarged ovaries and the cysts on them.
Not getting pregnant, despite having carefully timed, unprotected sex for one year.
The cause of infertility may be difficult to determine but may include inadequate levels of certain hormones in both men and women, and trouble with ovulation in women. The main symptom is an inability to get pregnant. In many cases, there are no additional symptoms.
Many treatments significantly improve the chances of getting pregnant. They include hormone treatments, fertility drugs and surgery. In addition, assisted reproduction uses various medical techniques to fertilise an egg.
In women, infertility is treated with:
Fertility drugs and hormones to help the woman ovulate or restore levels of hormones.
Surgery to remove tissue that is blocking fertility (such as endometriosis) or to open blocked fallopian tubes
